New members of staff

November 2011

Alexandru Stancu and Joaquin Carrasco

The Control Systems Group has recently made two new lectureship appointments to help support the application of control in two strategic research themes of the School and Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences.

The first is Alexandru Stancu on the left on the picture. Alexandru is a member of the new Research Centre for Radwaste and Decommissioning and will spend most of his time helping to establish the University's new research facility in Cumbria (the Dalton Cumbrian Facility). Alexandru will be exploring the use of autonomous systems in the field of nuclear decommissioning and consequently working closely with EEE, Dalton and UMARI. Alexandru has had research appointments at the Technical University of Catalonia, the University of Mons and was until recently a lecturer at the University of Galati in Romania.

The second is Joaquin Carrasco on the right on the picture. Joaquin has been appointed to develop control systems for application to future power networks, and in particular Smart Grids. Joaquin will work closely with academics in both the Control Systems and Power Systems groups in EEE. Prior to his appointment as lecture at the University of Manchester, Joaquin held the post of research associate at Leibniz University in Hannover and the University of Manchester.

This brings the total number of academics in the Control Systems Group to nine, which makes it one of the largest groups of its kind in the UK and Europe.
