Workshop on Distribution Network Modelling for the Smart Grid held at the School of EEE

25 May 2011

The transition to a low-carbon society, where renewables and new technologies (such as electric vehicles) are common place, requires a drastic change in the way we manage our electricity networks. This future electricity network is often called the Smart Grid. Aware of the challenges electrical engineers will face to make this happen, the EEPS Group in collaboration with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI, USA) organised in 9-10 May a Workshop on "Distribution Network Modelling for the Smart Grid".

The two-day workshop was locally coordinated by Dr Luis(Nando) Ochoa, and delivered by Roger Dugan, Senior Technical Executive of EPRI, and also IEEE-PES Fellow. Invited talks also included Dr Ochoa and Dr Pierluigi Mancarella from EEPS, as well as Dr Andrew Keane from UCD, Ireland.

Seven countries were represented in 25 attendees, a third of which were from industry. Extremely positive feedback was received. We believe this event (and future similar ones) will help strengthen not only the links between the EEPS Group and world-renowned institutions such as EPRI, but also to generate more interest on this massive challenge that is the Smart Grid.
