Winner of the 2009 EDS PhD Student Fellowship

Mr Faisal Amir has been awarded IEEE Electron Devices Society (EDS) 2009 PhD student fellowship for the demonstration of significant ability to perform independent research in the field of Electron Devices. He has proven record of academic excellence.
Three fellowships are awarded each year, with the intention of at least one fellowship being given to eligible students in each of the following geographical regions every year: Americas, Europe/Middle East/Africa, and Asia & Pacific. Mr Amir has been awarded the fellowship for region 8 representing the University of Manchester, UK.
Mr Amir is pursuing PhD under supervision Prof Mo Missous in the M&N research group within the school.
The award plaque was presented by EDS president, Cor Claeys in the 2009 IEDM, during plenary session on 7th December 2009 at the Hilton Baltimore, MD, USA.
Mr Amir joined the University of Manchester, UK in 2006 enrolling for an MSc leading to a PhD programme under a National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST, Pakistan) scholarship. He completed the MSc course with distinction in 2007 and continued for a PhD under the supervision of Prof Mo Missous, on high power Terahertz sources and in particular advanced graded gap Gunn diodes physical model development. During the PhD he took several MSc level courses from MSc Nanosciences program being taught at The University of Manchester. It has provided him with an excellent base for current research work and as a result he has published the research work in various conferences. Great potential is seen in his novel research work, which will make significant contribution to future THz systems and in particular in security imaging systems. Mr Faisal Amir is an IEEE and IET student member
