Thought for Food Competition
March 2011
At Manchester we have managed to secure one of just 12 positions for European universities to compete in the inaugural 'Thoughts for Food' competition, which is sponsored by Syngenta.
This is both an excellent CV enhancement opportunity for those fortunate students from the two university teams of 5 who are selected to attend the 'One Young World' summit in Zurich as well as being a great public engagement showcase to put Manchester on the map for the e-Agri theme.
The OYW Event is referred to as the young person’s Davos and has a very high profile, keynote speeches last year being given by Bob Geldof and Kofi Annan. To send each student to the summit will cost the sponsors 3000 Euros per seat.
The teams must be multidisciplinary and so it is anticipated that the final selected team from Manchester will have at least one member from each of the Faculties. The Sustainable Consumption Institute has volunteered to help us promote this with the student community in Manchester and so details may be found at the following web-sites and in the attached PDF file. It is anticipated that the final team from the University will be selected by a panel lead up by Dame Nancy Rothwell.
For more information visit the Thought for Food page on the Sustainable Consumption Institute website.
The competition opens on the 15th March and will run for around 8-12 weeks. It will require weekend working from students and so may be better undertaken by postgraduate students rather than undergraduates, so as to avoid exam pressures, though any student up to 30 years old may apply. Please could we encourage appropriate students to apply from across the School.
