Biography
Tony Brown is Associate Dean for the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences (EPS) and holds the Chair in Communication Engineering in the MACS research group ( http://www.eee.manchester.ac.uk/research/groups/macs/staff/?strResGroup=MACS), School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering .
Tony is a Fellow of the IET and the IMA, a Senior Member of the IEEE and a Member of the IOD. He joined academia in 2003 as research group leader after a 30 year industrial career including senior Board level positions. Tony is retained as (part time) Chairman of Easat Antennas Ltd.
In his Associate Dean role, Tony is a member of the senior management team for the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, the largest in the UK, with special responsibility for Teaching and Learning.
In research he is heavily involved in antennas, propagation, wireless communications and in radar.
Specific recent projects include:
ultra-wide band antennas and propagation
Wide band large scale arrays for radio astronomy (Square Kilometre Array)
Impact of Wind Turbines on Radar systems
RF Friendly Buildings (Frequency Sensitive Walls)
Interference effects in UWB communications
Sidelobe limits in small array antennas
Tony has acted as a international consultant on marine saftey related radar matters (including Vessel Traffic Radar) Professor Brown has served on numerous international comittes including being a member of the Technical Advisory Commission (TAC) to the Federal Communication Commission(USA).Tony has lectured widely on technical and managerial topics at the invitation of such organisations as the FAA . He is cvurrently UK representative to the EU-COST ASSIST initiative.
Professor Brown has acted as external advisor to UK Universities in course development. He has been External Examiner (undergraduate programmes) for the University of Oxford and until 2007 for Surrey and for post graduate (taught) programmes at Brunel.
A physicist and mathematician by training, he has worked for GEC-Marconi Research (now BAESystems ATC), Standard Telecommunications Laboratories (now Nortel), University of Surrey (as the first Racal Telecommunications Fellow) and Racal before forming Easat Antennas Ltd in 1987 . Professor Brown is retained as part time Chairman of the company.
Tony Brown has been involved directly with governments in Europe and the Far East as a technical advisor. He was a founder member of the EPSRC Communications College. Tony has had a career long involvement with computer based analysis techniques and was the first chairman of the UK Chapter of the Applied Computational Electromagnetics Society (1986).
