Current occupation: Radio Frequency and Microwave Design Engineer at ASTRON

 

Experience in radio frequency design, characterisation and analytical skills helped me get my current role. Understanding the fundamentals of radio frequency theory and laboratory skills were also very helpful.

This position involves designing various modules of a receiver system with state-of-the-art in pHEMT and HBT technologies. It also involves understanding SiGe and GaAs processes.

I enjoyed the diverse and international community of the University. I also liked the excellent teaching staff and access to the microwave laboratory which houses high-quality instruments.

Semiconductor physics, microwave theory, the Smith Chart, source and load pulling are a few of the technical subjects which will always be helpful in my career. High frequency characterisation, calibration, ADS, HFSS and transistor modelling are helpful too.

I would advise students applying to this course to understand the fundamentals of radio frequency and semiconductors, as well as the Smith Chart and matching paper. They should also develop laboratory experience and relationships with industry.
