Overview

Since 2003, The University of Manchester has worked closely with National Grid on research relating to the design and operation of the UK Transmission System. The National Grid Power Systems Research Centre consist of the largest and best equipped high voltage laboratory of any UK University and now include facilities for teaching and research on topics such as power system protection and insulating materials.

National Grid Power Systems Research Centre

One of great challenges facing the world today is ensuring reliable and sustainable supplies of energy in increasing quantities while also meeting the desire for reduced environmental impact. The National Grid Power Systems Research Centre is the home to over £8m of research funded by industry, the UK government and the EU. Only through innovation can the challenges associated with increased energy demand and changing generation mixes be solved.

Facilities

The National Grid Power Systems Research Centre, part of the Electrical Energy and Power Systems Group, houses the largest and best equipped high voltage laboratory (NGPSRC) of any UK university.

Research areas:

  • Better prediction of the remaining life of power system components and where appropriate, management of the operating conditions to maximise life.
  • Improvement of power system stability and security through better communications, control and protection
  • Successful integration of renewable sources
  • Improvement of the performance of power system components and power quality
  • Impact of competitive markets on investments and secure supply
  • Sustainable rural electrification schemes to help alleviate poverty
  • Use of higher voltages in extreme environments including those connected with more electric vehicles.
