Integrated drives

Led by Professor Barrie Mecrow at the University of Newcastle and involving the universities of Manchester, Nottingham, Sheffield and Bristol.

The drives theme encompasses research ranging from the physical integration of the drive, to the design of components, through to the integrated design of the system, and focusing on increasing power density, efficiency, functionality and reliability and reducing system costs.

The research at Manchester is split into two distinct strands of work: electrical drives operating at higher ambient temperature than currently possible or at best extremely difficult, to potentially open up new market opportunities for electric drive technology such as oil and gas, aerospace, etc.; and exploring the system-level benefits in complex multi-drive systems, focusing on how multi-drive systems interact with each other and with the power network.
