Ph.D. in "Electron Spectroscopy of Reactive Gases" in 1982. Appointed as Lecturer in Electrical Engineering & Electronics at UMIST in 1985, specialising in microelectronic circuit design using custom VLSI, and became Professor of Electronic Systems Engineering in 2004. Leader of the Sensing, Imaging and Signal Processing research group from 2004-2007. Director of Teachig and Learning for the School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering from July 2012 to date. Teaching has embraced “High Level Programming”, “Digital Systems Design”, “VLSI Circuit Design”, “Silicon Integrated Technology”.
Became "teaching focussed" in 2016. Previously, research interests focussed on Microelectronic Circuit Design, Industrial Tomography and Wireless Sensor Networks for Industrial Processes.. Published over 160 research papers and organised the 1st World Congress on Industrial Process Tomography in 1999. Industrial collaborations with, for instance, Syngenta, Corus, Du Pont, Johnson Matthey, Bosch, Unilever, BNFL, National Nuclear Lab. Achievements include a miniaturised electrical capacitance tomograph using custom silicon sensors (“Towards Process Tomography for Monitoring Pressure Filtration”, IEEE Sensors Journal, 5,2, 2005) and an intrinsically safe electrical impedance tomograph (“Weak Inversion Measurement Circuit for Miniature Electrical Capacitance Tomography”, IEEE Trans. Instr. & Meas., 57, 2, 2008). Explored wireless sensor networks with funding from the EPSRC WINES initiative. The AASN4IP project explored the potential for monitoring nuclear storage ponds using autonomous underwater vehicles (“Mapping Legacy Storage Ponds”, Nuclear Future, 7,5, 2011).
