School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Microelectronics & Nanostructures (M&N) Group

Molecular Beam Epitaxy

Group overview

M&N is a multi-disciplinary research group within the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. As a consequence, much of our work is collaborative with other departments within the University of Manchester (including Physics, Materials Science, Instrumentation (DIAS) and Chemistry) or with other academic departments around the UK, Europe and overseas. We are also extensive users of large national and international research facilities.

Research activites

Our research activities cover a range of topics concerned with the fundamental materials and physics issues surrounding advanced semiconductor devices, novel high speed electronic and optoelectronic devices, and advanced sensors and systems. There are 11 academic staff in the group, all with established expertise in the micro- and nano-electronics field. There are also 18 research associates and 29 PhD students. The Head of Group is Professor Bruce Hamilton.

The group is superbly equipped for its research, with extensive facilities for semiconductor growth, device fabrication, material and device assessment, circuit measurements and simulation.

We are also very active in the training and recruitment of students through our postgraduate programmes:

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

Units on MSc in Nanolelectronics may be taken for Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Units will be delivered in 3 unit blocks to suit the needs of our industrial partners. For more information, please contact Professor Mohamed Missous.
