Student Experiences

The MSc in Nanoelectronics is a new course which had its first intake of students in Septemer 2008. Here is some student feedback about the course:

MSc Student ProfileVarun Kamboj
MSc in Nanoelectronics 2009-2010

Currently pursuing a PhD at the University of Hull

"Before coming to Manchester for the MSc in Nanoelectronics, I completed my undergraduate degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering in India. I made the difficult decision for me to reject a job from an Indian IT giant, Infosys, but after coming here, I realized what a terrific opportunity I had seized. It was my dream to walk on the same streets where Rutherford and Niels Bohr had once walked. I had a strong inclination towards physics since high school but the undergraduate degree could not somehow quench my thirst to understand it deeply. "

"I believe that the two-year-old course of MSc in Nanoelectronics offered by the University of Manchester, which is among the 40 top ranked universities worldwide and one of the largest universities in UK with more than 40,000 students every year, is the right decision for prospective home/EU and international students. If your goal is either a career in academia or industry in the very interesting and promising field of Nanoelectronics, this course will help you in that direction."

"For me, the best part of this course was the dissertation project, which is allocated individually. Also, all the projects are current research-oriented, which gives an insight into the world of research. Thus it will instil me with great confidence at the end of the project. The academic staff are very caring and always encourage interactive lecture sessions. The labs are also designed according to the requirements of the content delivered in the lectures. The top notch infrastructure involves extremely well-equipped labs, MBE machines and other cutting-edge facilities where active research is carried out on a regular basis."

MSc Student ProfileMustafa Irshaid
MSc in Nanoelectronics 2009-2010

"From the moment I arrived at Manchester airport, I was greeted by ‘purple people’ and taken to my accommodation. The orientation week organised by the university for new students was very informative. Manchester is a nice city to live in and among the safest in the UK. It is a big metropolitan area with a long history, but the cost of living is less than other big cities in the UK. The weather is moderate most of the time. Some people complain about the rain, but it keeps the air clean and I like it as long as I have my small umbrella with me."

MSc in Nanoelectronics 2008-2009

Currently pursuing a PhD at Dublin City University

"The most enjoyable part of the course is the lab work which involves working in an extremely clean environment on extremely small devices which require great amounts of precision, working with machines like the MBE which are hugely expensive and require great expertise. These labs make the course all the more interesting when you find the practical applications of the things studied in theory. Also the facilities provided by the University are superb with a number of libraries around with almost all the books that you might need throughout the year."

"When courses began all lecturers and administrative staff proved to be helpful and approachable. The lectures were (and are still!) lively and dialog/questioning has always been encouraged during lectures. The course material is of a high standard and can be challenging at times. Meeting my fellow students and lecturing staff was a great experience. It is the first time in my studies that I have studied with people from such a diverse spread of geographical and cultural backgrounds. I think that this is all the more reason for taking such a course because you learn key social skills parallel to your studies. These skills are critical in the lively and global atmosphere of today’s world."

"The MSc in Nanoelectronics is well structured with lectures ranging from basic principles of physics to up-to-date information about the latest happenings in the field. This course also provides practical training in the fabrication of nanoelectronic components using both traditional and solution based fabrication techniques. The research facilities are excellent in the department and the lecturers in the Microelectronics & Nanostructures group are very helpful and supportive throughout the course. As a truly multicultural city, Manchester has everything to offer for students from all cultures and backgrounds. I would definitely say that coming to Manchester has been one of the best decisions I have ever made."

"I chose the University of Manchester for some good reasons and one of them is the sophisticated research facilities and projects going on in my field of study. Another reason was 'its multicultural diversity". Manchester is like a 'specimen of the whole world' where you meet different people and learn about their cultures. That was one of the reasons I wanted to come to Manchester and to experience the different culture which brought a lot of drastic changes in me. "
