Experience at the University
"My name is Tiju Mathew Thomas and I'm from India. I first came to Manchester in September 2008 to pursue my MSc in Nanoelectronics at the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Graduated in December 2009.
I chose the University of Manchester for some good reasons and one of them is the sophisticated research facilities and projects going in my field of study.
'Why The University of Manchester?' is the question that many people have asked me and the clear answer was 'its multicultural diversity'. Manchester is like a 'specimen of the whole world' where you meet different people and learn about their cultures. That was one of the reasons I wanted to come to Manchester and to experience the different culture which brought a lot of drastic changes in me.
My course at this University has provided me with numerous skills like presentation, communication with confidence and technical skills. Ours was the first batch for MSc Nanoelectronics 2008-2009, with seven students, so we were given a blended mix of lectures and personal attention which helped me a lot in my academic studies.
The University has many excellent facilties and one of them is The University's Career Service, The International Advice Team and The Student Services Centre. The Careers Service provides the best resources and materials to boost my CV and helped me a lot in finding a suitable research position. Their advice on how to approach an interview made my views more clear on what an employer really wants from me.
Working as a Student Ambassador for the University of Manchester was really fun as I always loved to work with primary kids and college students (Y9- Y12). This position made me feel condifident enough to approach new people and talk to them about myself and my experience in Uni. The best part of this job was its whole focus on discussing the progression routes and career opportunities and to raise awareness of the many routes and choices available following completion of a degree.
I love my Uni and I am glad that I am a part of this lively and vibrant city. God bless Manchester!"
