The University of Manchester launched its 2020 Vision Statement in May 2011 which includes the aim “to position the University as an exemplary employer and a destination of preference for all staff, both nationally and internationally, to enable it to become one of the leading universities in the world by 2020”.
This aim is supported by our School strategic plans which are reviewed annually in consultation with all staff, and our responsible processes will help us to achieve this.

The Equality Challenge Unit’s Athena SWAN Charter was established in 2005 to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths and Medicine (STEMM) employment in higher education and research. The charter now recognises work undertaken to address gender equality more broadly, and not just barriers to progression that affect women.
The School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering was awarded the Bronze Award in 2014 in recognition of our practices. Bronze institution awards recognise that the institution has a solid foundation for eliminating gender bias and developing an inclusive culture that values all staff.
Our Equality and Diversity Committee has 13 members and is attended by the Head of School. The Equality and Diversity Committee brings together male and female members, and staff at both junior and senior levels.
Our members bring a variety of experiences including those with caring responsibilities and those who work flexibly in the School due to their commitments.
Our work deals with:
- our current position in relation to women’s representation and career progression within STEMM;
- how our policies, practices and procedures support women’s representation and career progression;
- whether there are areas that need to changed.
We are currently working on the submission for Bronze renewal and on championing a range of outreach activities, including industrial talks, networking and career guidance.
We work with the following groups:
- CIGRE UK Women’s Network.
- L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science - an international programme which recognises the achievements and contributions of exceptional females across the globe by awarding promising scientists with fellowships to help further their research.
- Soapbox Science - a novel public outreach platform for promoting women scientists and the science they do.
- Women in Science, Engineering and Technology - a network for all female students, research and academic staff in the Faculty of Science and Engineering.
